Learning through experiencing the world
Buddhika Daluwatte is making the most of his time as an international learner at NMIT, not only thriving in his studies, but giving back by supporting other learners on their journey.
He is completing his Master of Applied Management(external link), whilst also working with the student association, SANITI, as a Student Executive member.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Buddhika has met many friends here at NMIT and plans to work in New Zealand after studying.
“I’m thankful to be associated with a lot of diverse cultures and am involved in several different clubs throughout Nelson,” Buddhika says. “SANITI is an opportunity to connect with others and experience New Zealand.”
Buddhika believes there are several key factors to a great learning experience, and he’s appreciated the applied ‘real world learning’ on offer at NMIT.
“Learning never stops,” he says. “Effective learning is not just from books, but it's about applying the knowledge that you’ve gained to real world scenarios and adapting when you need to.”
He encourages his fellow students to ask questions about their studies and about the world around them to gain knowledge and share with others to retain it.
“Don’t be afraid to talk to other people and just be a good human wherever you go and whatever you do.”
Buddhika is considering several career paths once he graduates, but his long-term goal is to start a business related to real estate.
“This is because it was the last thing I did in Sri Lanka,” he says.
SANITI, the student association at NMIT, plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall student experience by providing support, advocacy, and opportunities for engagement and involvement in campus life.
