A celebration of creativity and perseverance marked the opening and awards ceremony of the 2024 NMIT Bachelor of Arts and Media (BAM) end-of-year graduate exhibition, honouring an impressive range of talent and accomplishments.

The prestigious Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmith Excellence Award was presented to the top student for Level 7 Studio Practice, Shelby Rusbatch, for her whimsical and insightful work into the topic area of misinterpretation.

Shelby was also selected by the Nelson Suter Art Society (NSAS) with an Award of Distinction, granting her the opportunity to showcase her work at the McKee Gallery in 2025, alongside fellow award recipients Sonja Walker and Leanna Watkins.

NSAS judges praised these three artists for their deeply personal and heartfelt interpretations of the world, a testament to the exceptional standard of this year’s graduating class.

Finally, the Impressions Picture Framers and Art Supplies Distinction Award was awarded to Holly Millar for her stunning series of self-portraiture. This award acknowledged the quality and high level of execution shown in her series of five carefully composed self-portrait works.

Trisha Krishnasamy, Curriculum Area Manager of Creative Technologies and Service Industries, commended the students for their resilience and dedication.

"Over the last three years, our students have studied a variety of visual and digital art subjects which culminated in this, the final year where students create a single project in their chosen Studio area, including image, graphic design, lens and object,” she says.

This occasion honours the talents and accomplishments of our Level 7 Bachelor of Art & Media students, providing a wonderful platform to view the results of their hard work and artistic growth.”

This annual event continues to be a platform for emerging talent, offering the Nelson community a glimpse into the future of arts and media.
