Dylan Gregory works on one of the Northern Trust rescue helicopters.

“Over the last ten years, every workplace I have been employed at has had NMIT graduates,” Dylan says.

Working with the Northern Emergency Service Trust(external link) as a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in Whangarei, Dylan believes the NMIT Certificate that he completed in 2011 is the best way to get into the industry.

“It now seems most employers want people to complete a pre-employment course before being hired.”

During his course, Dylan studied several license papers alongside the course content.

“I also used the NMIT online diploma courses to help gain license papers.”

Dylan has seen some big changes in the industry and the way aircraft are maintained over the years.

“Manufacturers are starting to focus more on replacing rather than repairing components, and duel-rated engineers are becoming in high demand as Avionics are becoming more and more integrated into aircraft,” Dylan says.

He says health and safety continues to be a big focus.

“More and more systems are being put in place to support safety in the workplace.”

NMIT set up learners to enter an industry with the confidence and skills needed to take flight in the aviation engineering industry.

The practical Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering(external link) is hands-on and provides all the knowledge necessary for someone to step into this industry.

The flexible and online Diploma in Aeronautical Maintenance(external link) is designed for those already working in the industry who are looking to pass their license exams. AMEL training schemes are also available for those seeking to pass select exams.
