Shaylee entered the hairdressing industry at 16, completing her trade certificate qualification here in Nelson.
After gaining valuable skills and technical ability as a colour technician, the next step had her progress to managing salons and adding business and staff management to her skillset.
Travelling overseas on a hairdressing working holiday was full of exciting new opportunities allowing Shaylee to test her skills and gain new experiences working with different cultures and fashion trends.
On her return to Nelson, Shaylee opened her salon for a successful 13 years. A valuable experience and an accomplishment, but new challenges beckoned, and she felt curious about teaching the hairdressing arts and helping new stars into the industry.
After being lucky enough to have an opportunity to be part of NMIT's Level 3 Hairdressing programme, Shaylee decided that this was her new path and went on to study and complete the required teaching papers.
Starting from the bottom and working her way towards owning her own business has given Shaylee a unique insight into what makes a great hairdresser.
Teaching allows Shaylee to share her skill and passion for hairdressing, warmly and positively guiding new students along their learning journey alongside a team of like-minded tutors.
