“CGI is so time-consuming as you’re working frame by frame but once it’s all put together it looks awesome,” says Emmie, a Bachelor of Art and Media ākonga (student) who is taking CGI as an elective course.
For her project, she made a short film about a character who needed to use the bathroom, but the doorway was a portal that kept leading them to different locations.
“Neil [Benson, CGI tutor at NMIT Te Pūkenga] suggested I put this into a competition next year,” she says.
Neil recently invited his students to a film shoot with Moose Ninja Studios where they had a go working with some of the equipment.
“I got to take a shot with a very expensive camera,” Emmie says. “It’s weird using gear like that—there are so many things on it, and it’s a bit overwhelming, but I was shown exactly what to do.”
Emmie loves how everyone in her class is willing to help one another out and that the environment in G Block overall is such a community and a hub of activity.
“I think the best thing about studying here is the constant connection in G Block,” she says. “There are always events, and everyone is always so interested and supportive in what everyone else is doing.”
Brandon started working towards a Diploma in Animation(external link) in February 2023.
“I found out about the programme from a career advisor two weeks before it started and decided to go with it because it seemed exciting,” Brandon says.
He is finding the people friendly and easy to get on with.
“The class atmosphere has been fun,” he says. “We get along well and support each other.”
Brandon used some high-end camera gear at NMIT for his film project and has enjoyed seeing the final results after all the learning and hard work he has put in throughout the year.
Having not considered animation as a career before taking the course, Brandon is leaving every door open for opportunity to walk through.
“I’m not sure what I’ll be doing after study, but I hope I have a better idea by Level 7,” he says.
Enrolments are open for a February 2024 start. For more information about our CGI programmes and guidance on how to apply, visit our website(external link).
