NMIT joins the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology

On 1 April the Education (Vocational Education and Training Reform) Amendment Bill came into effect. On this date NMIT joined New Zealand’s fifteen other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics to form the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST). We are now known as NMIT Ltd.

The long-term goal of this merger is for learners to have more access to high-quality learning in the workplace as well as on campus. It will become easier to move between learning in the workplace, on campus and online. People living in remote parts of New Zealand will have more opportunities to learn online, and there will also be more support to help all learners achieve their goals.

Learners won’t notice any changes in 2020 and they will complete their qualifications through their chosen provider, and the provider’s name on qualifications will stay the same. They will be able to enrol in another course, including courses that last for more than one year. Support services, fees and learners’ relationships with organisations such as StudyLink will stay the same.

All staff of NMIT will transfer over to the new entity.

The entity will be called the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology for the foreseeable future while the decision around where the headquarters of the new Institute will be, is on hold while New Zealand is at Alert Level 4 as a result of COVID-19.

The NMIT Ltd Board will be a subsidiary of NZIST with members including:
