Te Pūkenga NMIT allowed kura (schools) to decide which student best embodied the values of Te Pūkenga for the 2022 awards.

These values are:
• Manawa nui – we reach out
• Manawa roa – we learn and achieve together
• Manawa ora – we strengthen and grow the whole person.

Samuel Stevens received the award at Nelson College for Boys, which comes with a $1000 scholarship for course related costs.

“I didn’t know I was getting it, it was pretty exciting,” Samuel said.

He came along to the recent automotive Taster Day as he was keen on learning more about it.

“I didn’t really know where I could learn automotive stuff and it turns out I can do it right here in Nelson,” he said.

He was also assessed on a mock interview held at Te Pūkenga NMIT recently, designed to give ākonga some experience with job interviews before leaving school.

Vikki Heays, Careers Advisor at Nelson College, said Sam was awarded the scholarship because he demonstrates the qualities and attributes that show he will be successful in gaining his qualifications.

“Sam was the kind of student who always turns up to class on time and in the correct uniform. He always has the correct gear he needs so he is ready to learn and always demonstrates a strong work ethic, even during times of online learning,” Vikki said.

“We have no doubt he will engage fully in his course, and that he will be snapped up by an employer due to his already well-developed employability skills.”
