Blair Jones, second year tauira (student) in the Bachelor of Computer Generated Imagery(external link) programme, received an award for Best Animation for his short film, Foreign Soil, his Level 5 final project.
The film, follows a WW1 soldier who survives the Gallipoli disaster and is subsequently plunged into the horrors of the Western Front.
Blair said it was nice to be able to submit his short film and be recognized for all the hard work he had put into it.
“After my career change from being an Aeronautical Engineer, the CGI programme has really allowed me to tap into my creative side,” he said.
“I’m loving every chance I get to create something.”
Blair said the programme was teaching him all the elements involved in making a quality animation.
“It gives you the ability to produce a project from start to finish all by yourself.”
Tutor, Neil Benson, walked away with Best Visual Effects for the film The British Broadcasting Corporal(external link).
Neil said the Gold Reel screenings were a red-carpet event and the Suter Theatre was packed and buzzing. There are screenings across Te Tauihu, including Motueka, Takaka and Blenheim. Book tickets here(external link).
