Dr. Akhavan’s tertiary education has been devoted to the study of fish.
With a focus on fish reproduction physiology, Dr. Akhavan has a Ph.D. in Zoology and Animal Biology from the University of Otago.
Through his Ph.D. studies, he has gained strong command of state-of-the-art techniques, such as qPCR, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), cloning, recombinant protein generation, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry.
Dr. Akhavan gained aquaculture industry experience working as a Hatchery Operator at New Zealand King Salmon before starting at NMIT in 2020 where he’s a tutor for the Sustainable Aquaculture(external link) and Bachelor of Aquaculture and Marine Conservation(external link) programmes.
He also supports third-year degree students and postgraduate students with their Applied Industry Project(external link).
Dr Akhavan is a proactive tutor who strives to create a feeling of community in the classroom.
He does this by modelling and encouraging positive behaviours, creating opportunities for meaningful interactions, and being aware of students who may need additional support.
Dr Akhavan is a widely-published academic who’s made significant contributions to his field of study and he’s an asset to NMIT’s Aquaculture and Marine Conservation programmes.
