Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements

NCEA Level 2 which must include 12 credits in Level 1 Mathematics.
OR
New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3) Ara Health Pathway or equivalent
OR
If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g., International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

Alternative Requirements

Evidence of literacy, numeracy, and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be demonstrated through study, work, and/or life experience. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.

English Requirements

If English is not your first language, you may be required to provide evidence of your English language skills as outlined below:
IELTS Academic: A score of 6.5 (no lower than 6.5 in any subtest).
If you have no evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment.

If the number of applicants exceeds available places, selection will consider:

Evidence of interest and motivation
Academic achievement
Referees' reports
Relevant regional considerations

Successful applicants will be notified in writing and asked to confirm their place on the programme.

Additional Requirements

Consent to Disclosure of Information: Successful applicants will be required to complete a New Zealand Police Consent to Disclosure of Information form.
First Aid Certificate: A current first aid certificate (Red Cross Comprehensive or St John's Workplace) is required at the start of the programme.
Interview: Applicants who meet academic entry criteria may be required to attend an interview.
Referee Reports: Provide evidence of good character and personal attributes via two referee reports.
- Your referee reports, personal statement, and interview (if required) should demonstrate suitability for nursing.
- In your personal statement, outline why you have chosen nursing as a career and highlight personal qualities or relevant life experiences that enhance your application.
Health Authority Requirements: In order to participate in clinical components of the programme, you must meet various Health Authority requirements. Currently, MRSA clearance is required by most clinical practice areas.
