This micro-credential teaches ākonga the protocols for the New Zealand National Vegetation Survey Databank, managed by Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research). You’ll gain practical experience in establishing, relocating, and re-measuring 20 x 20 permanent plots, measuring stems, saplings, and seedlings, and conducting Recce site and vegetation descriptions.

You will also learn to record and store data accurately, using either paper datasheets or electronic capture devices. The course is delivered through preparatory learner-managed activities, face-to-face workshops, and practical fieldwork, giving you the skills to carry out permanent plot monitoring and Recce assessments confidently.

You will cover:

  • Background and purpose of 20 x 20 permanent plots

  • Establishing, relocating, and re-measuring plots

  • Measuring stems, saplings, and seedlings

  • Conducting Recce site and vegetation descriptions
