A pottery showcase of talent from around the motu is coming to Nelson

The biennial event brings Nelson city alive with all things clay and is designed celebrate ceramic art and encourage and inspire potters from experts to beginners.

There are demonstrations from master potters Christine Boswijk and Royce McGlashen, sessions on making a teapot, handbuilding, glazing, and a ‘potters in the park’ pottery market.

NMIT’s G Space gallery, 65 Nile Street will display works by students and alumni from the Dunedin School of Art, 1-9 October 10am-4pm.

Creative minds from across the region have come together to organise the event, including NMIT tutor Sara Matthews, who is working with the organisers.

Community Arts Manager for the Nelson Arts Council, Lloyd Harwood has also been enlisted to help.

“We wanted to invite some of the country’s best potters to gather for a series of exhibitions, workshops, and events, for an exchange of techniques and ideas, and to show their work,” said Harwood.

Nelson Clay Week is designed to appeal to a broad audience, with workshops aimed at all skill levels.

“We started working through our list of ceramic artists and practitioners, and the response was immediate. Before we knew it, we had dozens of workshops taking shape,” said Harwood.
