Nan knows best

There was a touch of glamour on campus recently when the Level 3 Certificate in Hairdressing ākonga displayed their skills in a competition.

The Level 3 Salon Support ākonga had half an hour to complete the look in the Ākonga Hub at the Nelson Campus.

The theme was ‘1800s glam’, and the three judges, kaimahi Paula Canning, Charlotte Goodman and Chris Newth, considered hair, outfit and makeup. They were extremely impressed by the efforts put into the day.

Paula, a hairdressing tutor at NMIT Te Pūkenga, took a moment to congratulate every learner and their models for their time and energy before the results were announced, and was especially pleased with the talent on display.

Ākonga Alanis Strange, who placed second in the competition, said she was a bit nervous as she watched her model being judged.

“I thought it would be great if I got a place, but at the end of the day I’ve already learned a lot from this experience, and that’s what matters,” she says.

Alanis has always been into hair but didn’t think it was something she would ever choose as a career.

“My nana had a dream of me being a hairdresser, and it turns out, I love it!”

Alanis has studied at NMIT previously, in Adventure Tourism.

“But I think I’ll be doing something in the future with hair,” she says.

The winner of the competition for 2023 was Vinita Chandra with her model Monika with her beautiful authentic Indian outfit and on-point styling, second place to Alanis Strange with model Holly and third place went to Georgia Garcia and model, Ember.
