Beauty Therapy tutor, Kylie Marsh says, "People don't appreciate their feet until they older and setting up the session with the Giants encourages men to think about their feet." Members of the Nelson Giants squad know the importance of their feet and were very happy to receive the treatment. Year 2 student, Mel was in charge of the salon for the night and made sure everyone was well looked after. The students take turns being the salon manager as part of their programme.
Beauty Therapy students on the Nelson campus helped take off excess skin and moisturised to avoid future cracking in the skin. They also treated nails and cuticles. Mel says once people have the treatment, they love it and keep coming back. "A good foot massage helps with aches and pains as well as being relaxing. It can make a big change to people."
The students had chosen invigorating oils to use because the squad members were off to training after the session.
Some team members also enjoyed a head and shoulder massage.
Mel says on the two year programme they learn a lot about body health and nutrition as well as the practical skills of therapy.
Tutor, Kylie says the salon is one way NMIT helps prepare students for the industry. "Therapists need to be able to work with anyone."
The student salon, Beauty Zone, in Nelson is open to provide treatments to the public.
