Eva Tombs and Elicia Vervaart are recent Level 5 Diploma in Beauty Therapy(external link) graduates and have begun working at Mabin House(external link), a highly rated spa and salon located in a traditional 1860s villa in Nelson.

Elicia finds working at Mabin House great, as the owners, Jess and Tina, constantly push her to find her passion, and teach her many additional advanced treatments in the process.

“I discovered a passion for massage and skin,” Elicia said. “I found my case study during class to be amazing, it was great seeing how much I helped improve their skin.”

Elicia decided to give beauty therapy a go after being pushed by an old boss who could see she had a passion for it.

“I got to meet new people in my class and my tutors were excellent,” she said. “I learned so much about my own body as a woman.”

She hopes to learn more about the chemistry of skincare in the future, as well as other advanced treatments in this fast-growing industry.

Eva joined the Trades Academy course at school and always knew she wanted to do something beauty related for a career.

“I decided to study at NMIT because I had already studied there before and I liked it,” Eva said. “Nelson is my hometown, so it was great having friend and family support.”

Spa owners Jess and Tina occasionally transition new therapists into the workforce from Te Pūkenga NMIT, as they have a long-standing relationship with many of the tutors there.

“Eva and Elicia were thrown in the deep end last Christmas during our very busy period, but they managed well and are now fully-fledged wellness therapists, who our clients absolutely adore,” said Jess.

“We have loved being able to mold and shape them with the tools they learned through NMIT.”
